Past Champions

The Thriftway Washington State Womens Open

News Release - June 3, 2009

was once again held at the Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club in Federal Way, WA on June 2nd and 3rd. This is the ninth year for the Open, and the weather couldn't have been better. The first day of play started at 10:30 am so the players really felt the heat in the afternoon. Earlier tee times on the second day had the players really enjoying the beauty of the Northwest.

This years champion Jennifer Wyatt of Richmond, BC, Canada, took home the first place check of $4,000 and a beautiful Kusak crystal trophy. She led wire to wire for the two day tournament firing 70 - 69 for a new tournment record. This was a sweet victory for Jennifer as she has come close several times in the past to capturing the title. Jennifer is an LPGA tour winner posting a win in 1992. She played on tour from 1989 - 1998 and is currently teaching golf in Richmond at the Savage Creek Driving Range. She said it was "pretty darn cool to be in the present for the first time and not worrying about the results". She will be playing the the BCPA Women's Championship and maybe the CPGA Tournament in Ontario in August. She said she wouldn't miss this tournament and will definitely be returning to defend her title. Adrienne White of Red Deer, Alberta, Canada finished second shooting 72 - 72 with Marina Choi of Los Angeles, CA coming in 3rd with scores of 71 - 74. The field was comprised of 43 golfers from around the globe including Japan, Australia, Wales, and Canada. It was also very well represented by players from 11 different states. Big Breakers, Julie Wells of Wilsonville, OR and Kim Kouwabunpat of Upland, CA also competed.

There were 8 amateurs in the field and Stacy Blunt of Federal Way, WA took top honors as low amateur with a two day total of 156 . She too received a Kusak crystal trophy. Courtney Colmen of Rochester, WA was runner up. The Senior Division was won by Loretta Young of Mission, TX and she received $500.00 and a crystal trophy.

The championship has grown every year since it's inception in 2001 and once again had a purse of $20,000 with La Victoria adding an additional $3000 for the pros in the pro-am and Metropolitan Markets contributing $500 a day in skins money. MDA was the charity and they received a check of nearly $6,000.

We look forward to the championship next year, and what it brings to the Northwest and women's golf.
